Your posts used to get replies. Now they get nothing. Before you rewrite your whole strategy, check whether X is actually hiding you. Sometimes it is. Often it's something else.
What a shadowban on X actually is
X doesn't call it a shadowban. It talks about limiting the reach of accounts and posts that look like spam or break its rules. In practice, people mean a few different things.
- Search ban: your account or posts don't show up in search, even for your exact handle.
- Search suggestion ban: your account doesn't appear in the dropdown when people start typing your name.
- Reply deboosting: your replies get tucked behind "Show more replies" or a spam filter, so almost nobody sees them.
- Account limits: X temporarily restricts what you can do, usually with a notice when you log in.
Each one hurts in a different place. Reply deboosting is the worst for small accounts, because replies are how new people find you.
How to check
The quick way: run your handle through the X shadowban checker. It checks the usual suspects and tells you what it found.
You can also check by hand.
- Log out, or open a private window, and search for your handle. If your account doesn't come up, something's off.
- Search for a recent post of yours using a few exact words in quotes. If it doesn't show, your search visibility is limited.
- Ask a friend who doesn't follow you to open a thread you replied to. If your reply sits behind "Show more replies", you're being deboosted there.
- Log in and look for notices. If X locked or limited your account, it usually says so and asks you to do something, like confirm your email or phone.
When it isn't a shadowban
Most reach drops aren't bans. Rule these out first.
- Topic drift: the people who followed you for one thing stopped engaging when you switched to another.
- Timing: you started posting while your audience is asleep.
- One big post: a post went far, and normal posts look dead next to it.
- Links: posts that send people off X often travel less. Try the link in a reply.
- Normal ups and downs: some weeks are quieter. Look at a month, not a day.
What usually causes a real one
X's systems look for behavior that seems automated or spammy. These are the usual triggers.
- Following and unfollowing lots of accounts quickly.
- Joining follow trains, or being on big follow-back lists.
- Posting the same text or link again and again.
- The same reply, or a reply with a link, under lots of posts.
- Apps that like, follow or reply for you.
- A wave of blocks or reports from people who saw you as spam.
How to fix it
There's no form for "my reach is low". The fix is to stop doing what looks like spam, then give it time.
- Stop the trigger. Pause automation, stop mass following, leave any follow trains.
- Clean up. Delete obviously spammy posts and repeated replies, and remove apps you don't use from the connected apps in your X settings.
- Act like a person for a while. A few good posts, real replies, normal follows.
- Confirm your email and phone number if X asks.
- Check again in a week or two with the shadowban checker.
Most limits ease on their own once the behavior stops. A locked or suspended account is a different thing: follow the steps X shows you, and use its official appeal if you think it's a mistake.
How not to end up here again
Grow the slow way. Follow people you'd actually read, at a human pace. Reply to add something, not to drop a link. Build your circle from people in your space, not from lists of strangers. If you're wondering why random follow-backs are risky, read does follow-for-follow still work on X.
