The most common launch story on X goes like this: months of quiet work, one "it's live!" post, a few likes, then silence. The product might be great. Nobody was waiting for it.

The fix is to start before you're ready. Here's how to build an audience on X while you build the product.

Why before matters

People care about things they've watched grow. If someone saw your first ugly screenshot, voted on your logo and replied to your bug story, they'll show up on launch day. Not because you asked, but because they want to see how it turns out.

That's the whole game. You're not collecting followers. You're collecting people who are rooting for you.

Start with your lane

Pick the topic that sits around your product. If you're building an invoicing tool for freelancers, your lane is freelancing and getting paid, not your tech stack. Post for the people who'll use the product, and the right ones will find you.

What to post while you build

  • Progress: a screenshot, a short clip, a feature that finally works.
  • Decisions: "Going with one flat price instead of tiers. Here's why."
  • Questions: "Which of these two names would you trust more?" Real questions get real replies.
  • Lessons: something you learned about your users or your space, explained simply.
  • Behind the scenes: the bug that ate your weekend, the feature you cut.

Mix them. Three to five posts a week is plenty. Show the work instead of announcing it.

Talk with people, not at them

Most early growth comes from replies, not posts. Find the people your product is for and the people they listen to, and reply with something useful. Answer questions in your space even when they have nothing to do with your product. People remember who helped.

Follow people in your lane and engage with their posts. Some will follow you back and start seeing yours. That small circle is what gets your first posts moving.

Make your profile point at the product

  • Bio: what you're building and who it's for. Try the X bio generator.
  • Pinned post: a short intro to the product, with a waitlist link if you have one.
  • Link: your landing page or waitlist.

Every good reply sends people to your profile. Make sure they find the product there.

Collect your launch list

When someone says "I want this", don't lose them.

  • A waitlist on your landing page.
  • A note of everyone who replied asking for access.
  • The early testers who gave you feedback.

On launch day, these are the first people you tell. Personally, if you can.

Don't turn into an ad

The fastest way to lose an audience is to make every post a pitch. A simple rule: for every post about your product, write a few that are just useful to the people you want. They followed you for your take on the space, not for a countdown.

How long it takes

Longer than you'd like. A few weeks of posting gets you some familiar faces. A couple of months gets you people who'll actually show up. Start now, even if launch day is far off.

You don't have to build the circle alone, either. On FollowX you match with people in your niche and follow each other on X, so your posts reach people who care about the same things. Free. You just need X Premium to match, launch and upvote.

Then launch

When it's ready, launch where your new audience can back you. On FollowX your launch gets a public page, and every upvote comes from a verified X profile. Launching is free. Add our small badge to your site.
